I remember the first time I was forced to buy participation trophies for my cub scout pack. I got the smallest ones possible and the mom driving this was upset with me. What a waste of money.
We didn’t have participation trophies, just encouragement to practice and do our best. Guess that was reward enough… (This was in the dark ages, the 50s and 60s)
