Our suburb is surrounded by 35 and 45 mph roads. About 50% of drivers hold somewhere near that, given conditions and traffic. There is a rare ‘slower than,’ but most others think the lanes are a slalom and that just over a car length space is fair room for changing lanes. In several cases, drivers have abruptly exited the left turn, crossed 3 lines of thru traffic to get to the right turn lane and vice versa, all while using their phones. Guess we could blame that on an error in planning one’s route, but idiocy is its own reward.
Drive fast, drive slow, I don’t care, just don’t get close. If I’m too slow for you, go around. If you can’t handle that, then you are a poor driver and should slow down. I respect any driver’s speed choice as long as they stay well clear of other traffic and keep control of their vehicle.
I’m 72 and do the speed limit in town and 15 klicks over on the rurals and highways. Sadly the police and courts refuse to pull licenses when some old goat feeds them a line about having to get his sick wife to the doctor. Can’t see past the front bumper but still drives. we have a transit system and Uber.
I just made a 600 mile trip yesterday. For most of the trip speed limit is 70. I was holding steady at 77 and getting passed by everybody. Once I hit the 80 speed limit speeds opened to 90 mph. I’m more comfortable at 80 so kept it there. I”ll do 85 if not a lot of traffic. Yesterday was not that day.
One of my brothers-in-law used to work for DOT. Most roads are engineered for about 10 miles over the posted limit, simply because it is a given that most people do that anyway -not matter what’s posted.
Yes? That’s… how it works? There’s no contradiction here: I always drive at the correct speed. So, yeah: if you drive faster OR slower than me, you’re wrong and a bad driver.

I find myself shouting at a slow driver, “Move it, grandpa!” then I realize that I AM a grandpa.

My rule of thumb, the speed limit plus half again.
