If I’m driving on a road in familiar territory and/or I know which direction I’m going, “North”, “South”, “East”, or “West” direction-giving works for me. Otherwise, (turn) “your way” or “my way” may work better/quicker than saying “Left” or “Right”
East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet. East and West have different cultures and ways of doing things, and always will; they will never unite in doing things or looking at the world in the same way…………..Don’t go to Texas!!!!!!
When giving directions I tend to use landmarks….you know,turn left at the Burger King,go about a mile & you’ll see a playground on the corner,it’s only about another mile or so from there….you’re welcome….
Or she may be like my wife who many years ago gave me, a new visitor to her home town, these directions: “Don’t take that one street, take the other one”.
My sense of direction is so lousy, I get turned around the wrong way even WITH a compass display in my car’s rearview mirror. It’s even worse in my area, where most of the main roads are oriented NE-SW (labeled N-S) & SE-NW (labeled E-W) & so many of those are so curvy!
Downtown some light posts at intersections have bases with North, South, East and West arrows as part of the base. Helpful if you know they are there. Not helpful at all if you’re a lost tourist and don’t know the drill.
In Mexico, sometimes when you ask for directions, the person you are asking will give you the wrong directions rather than saying that they don’t know. It’s a cultural thing!
I have no sense of direction at all. I had to force myself to learn north, south, east, west and use it as much as I can. I can still get lost in a closet. Today I was told to go to the end of the hall and go right, I couldn’t miss it – I laughed. Yes, I can get lost and yes, I can miss it. (I didn’t, that time.)
Now we all know that you aren’t dyslexic. I have to look at my hands and figure out which one I write with – I’m right-handed. Please give me N-S-E-W or, even better, really obvious landmarks!
I once got lost going around the block. I was lost in Washington, DC, for 4 hours trying to get across the river to Arlington. I learned to ALWAYS have a map. But I have interesting trips!

Don’t even have or want a smart phone. Watching somebody scrolling like mad to find something, turns me off.

I have a small compass that fits easily in my purse. Cell service isn’t everywhere.

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

East, west, north, south, left, right, stop and do a cartwheel: none of that works for me. When I hear directions, I start drawing a map.

It’s pretty easy to tell N-S-E-W just look at the sun in the sky, where does it rise, where does it set, where is it mid day?!

Well Aunty, for once you have said something that we both can agree on. 1. You’re and Idiot and 2 you are lost.

I used to teach orienteering for Boy Scouts 20 years ago. Probably all obsolete, now that we all have GPS on our phones.

Go down to the filling station corner and then head toward the fire station. Stop about two blocks after that — and ask someone else.

Unless it’s nighttime or really super cloudy, there’s really no excuse for not being able to have at least a reasonable sense of direction…

I agree with Aunty Acid. Just give me a right, left or landmark and I’ll be fine.
