“She needs some extra attention right now. Try not to keep pushing her away.” Very good advice Elly. In fact that advice might also apply to someone not named Elizabeth.

My sister was in college when I was April’s age. I think she regrets not spending more time we when I was little. I barely know her. Precious time, Elizabeth.

Why does everyone automatically assume that an older sister is required to spend time with a much younger one whenever the younger one wants that? The same is not expected of an older brother…

Elizabeth is right. Her parents don’t care about her side, especially her right to privacy and to live her own life with her own friends. Elly only thinks of her as an unpaid baby-sitter! April is old enough to have her own playmates.

One of the greatest moments of my childhood was when my 16-year-old, beautiful, popular sister actually asked our mom if she could take me to cheerleading practice with her & her BFF. They decided to “test” the other girls to see if they could guess whose little sister I was: the BFF & I were both brunettes but my sister was a blonde). The greatest compliment was that they all guessed correctly because they said that I looked “just like her”. Believe me, that did wonders for my 9-year-old self-esteem.

My sister (22 months younger than me) and I are different as night and day. We never could stand each other and the one thing we ever both agreed on was we each had 1 child so they never had to suffer with siblings. Our mom bugged us both – well into adulthood – about having more to do with each other. My sister’s idea of a relationship is “I get to treat you like dirt and you have to love me in spite of it”. Finally I told mom “I didn’t get you pregnant. Why should she be my problem?”. Mom finally backed off. Sharing dna is no reason to have toxic relatives in your life.

Why does she need extra attention right now? Has she suffered some hardship offstage? Are repressed feelings of trauma from nearly drowning coming to the surface (no pun intended)?

The teen can teach the little kid how to smoke – that should shut the mom up.

Who had the kid, again? Yeah, it was “an accident,” but it’s still Ellie and John’s kid. How about paying more attention to YOUR kid? Nobody’s going to care if the pillow cases and blankets are folded.

Wait, are you her MOTHER? It’s like Ellie has ceded ALL responsibility for raising this child, entertaining her, keeping her company, and making sure she doesn’t sneak off and drown the family dog, to Elizabeth.
