I have an “I am leaving the house now” routine for my dog and my previous pets. I also have an “I am back home” routine, and once they learn it, they deal with it very well. But at first, it’s like, “You were gone forever!” “I took out the garbage.” or “I went to the mailbox.” Everything calms down once they learn the routine. Or I learn a new one.
When I came back from a month-long business trip, one of my cats ran up to me, followed me around and meowed for the thirty minutes it took to find the other cat. His attitude was, “Oh, it’s you. If it’s really you, you’ll know where the food is kept.” Cats!

My dog sleeps while I’m gone, I know because she didn’t hear me come in and I caught her.

A cat would care only if they could see the bottom of their food bowl.
