Where I’m from, we called that “tickball” — y’know, because of the wood ticks.

We enjoyed trying not to make obvious tracks so we could hide in the tall field grass!

So many butterflies. So many people are not missing all the insects.

When you drove 100 km on the Autobahn 50 years ago you had to wash the headlights because all those dead flies were seriously dimming them. Today you don’t have to wash them at all after 100 km not even with the higher speeds. Mostly not even when you’re refilling the tank after several 100 km.

But insects are not a nuisance but a necessity – as pollinators and in other crucial roles in nature. When I think back of the dirty car of my parents when I was a little kid and was promised an ice cone for cleaning the windshield and the lamps of the car I feel an uneasyness what happened to all the flies, bees, gnats, bugs…

Played soccer in high school in a fog so thick you could only see about 5 yards in front of you. You hear all the yelling and phoot sound of a ball being kicked but noise only. Twice that ball sailed out of the fog going into the goal….I got it out before anyone saw it go in. I then punted the ball back up field just as a couple of players ran out of the fog into view. The ball disappeared into the fog. Crazy game.
