You have to rent children, sticks, dirt, bugs, and snakes for the summer.

Camp is very entertaining, and I know that we’d have fun if it’d stop raining….

The music is from an Italian opera, “La Gioconda”.

    Hey, it stopped hailing, right?

But a written letter from a 12 year old – are these reruns from the 70s?

Being french, I had to look it up… (We would have had “Les Jolies colonies de vacances”, with the same idea). Did Lucretia get it (too young)?

When I was a kid, I didn’t even know that “summer camps” existed. I’m not even sure that my parents did. And if they did know, I’m sure that they also knew that they knew they couldn’t afford to send even one of us kids to one.

On the other hand, I enjoyed being free to roam on local field and forest land during 5 years of my childhood.

The creators of this strip should be commended for their frequent references to the past including personalities, issues and artists. Not unlike Tom Stoppard who throws in references to classic literature in his plays. It is refreshing. My 29-year son hadn’t a clue just as he did not know how to dial a rotary phone.

A good excuse to look up this song on YouTube, and maybe some of Sherman’s others.

Ah, the late, great Alan Sherman. One of Weird Al Yankovic’s main influences.

Impressive — though not surprising — that Cynthia is familiar with the work of the late, great Allan Sherman. Also not surprising that Dad and step Mom apparently are not.

I hated that song growing up. They’d play it over and over and over!

As a kid I thought Alan Sherman was so hilarious that I even read his autobiography (a genre that usually has very little appeal for me). His oeuvre doesn’t seem to hold up so well as some of my other childhood enthusiasms.
