our long-time summer public holiday deficit here in japan was resolved in recent years with the addition of days dedicated to the ocean and mountains – “marine day” (ya just gotta love how they always get the translation wrong, no matter what) coming up real soon on july 15 and “mountain day” on august 12. of course, the biggest unofficial holiday period of the year is obon, when the entire nation goes back home to visit grandma and grandpa for several days in mid-august… ☺
