Still the best version of “Treasure Island” ever made was the one from 1990 with Charlton Heston as Long John, a young Christian Bale as Jim Hawkins, Christopher Lee as Blind Pew, and Oliver Reed as Capt. Billy Bones. The Disney “Treasure Planet” is also good, and the Muppet version is a lot of fun.

My childhood memories of Treasure Island are third-hand at best, but I recently saw the first few episodes of the prequel television series, Black Sails. I recognized Captain Flint’s name from that, and was able to dimly recall the name of Blind Pew.

I must have seen part of the movie as a kid, because I had a series of nightmares where I found a paper with a single black spot on it in the basement. I’d wake up scared! One night, I saw a bunch of papers like that down the floor drain during the dream, and the dreams stopped.

When I was about 6 I got a story record, 10" LP, with Basil Rathbone. On one side he played Robin Hood. On the other side he narrated an abridged version of Treasure Island. I played it to death on the Magnavox console radio/record player in the living room. Dual 12" electromagnetic speakers,
