    Never were. AM was always one frequency per channel, changes in amplitude carried the sound information. FM is frequency modulated, changes in frequency carry the sound information. The one that never goes to couples therapy is spread-spectrum, changes in frequency carry the sound information but the center frequency of the transmitter and the receiver continually change in a synchronized fashion (co-invented by Hedi Lemarr, the famous actress).
