It’s long been my belief that Superman flies and the Flash runs by the same mechanism – bending space-time. Which also explains their ability to time travel. And how they can both carry people at super high speeds without having them burn up from friction.
I can see Kal-El and Kara Zor-El coming from a heavy gravity planet to a lighter gravity planet and having super strength and the ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound from the change in gravity, but I have never understood how they could engage in controlled sustained flight.
Over the years, many have suggested that superheroes fly due to super-flatulence, but somehow that doesn’t seem to come up in the fan discussions like this one…
