Still, same old mistake: in “to be or not to be” Hamlet is traditionally supposed to carry a knife, the skull is in another act: “Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him well”.
I’ve wanted to stage “Hamlet” both with a human Hamlet playing against a puppet cast and with a puppet Hamlet among a human cast. (To be honest, there are many other ways I’ve wanted to stage “Hamlet” as well.) I could give a metatheatrical justification for either (and make no mistake, “Hamlet” is metatheatre, 300 years before the term was coined), but honestly the fencing match in the final scene would be extremely hard to pull off either way.
I did, however, make a really sweet “Hamlet Monster” puppet a number of years ago. He resembles a black Cookie Monster, with a shock of white hair.

I like the part where Hamlet sings
“Ophelia, you’re breaking my heart. You’re shaking my confidence daily. Oh, Ophelia, I’m down on my knees. I’m begging you please to come home…”
But the kids never appreciate that archaic stuff…
