So, if a guy marries an ugly girl, they don’t need a license?

Snoopy had a marriage license once.

Charlie Brown went to City Hall to get Snoopy’s dog license renewed, but they gave him a driver’s license. The next day they gave him a marriage license. Then they gave him a fishing license. The arc ended with Snoopy tugging on Charlie Brown’s shirt, Charlie Brown saying “I don’t know, I’ll ask.” Then “She says you don’t need a license for that.” And the last panel is Snoopy walking away holding an AR-15 (or some such rifle).

    I’m not kidding.

Marriage licenses are a relatively new thing. Only in the last few centuries has it become a thing.

If sex outside of marriage is a crime, and licenses are required to be married, doesn’t that mean that the government is licensing sexual activity? (This is a yes-no question.)

I’m not sure why humans need a license to get married – a contract seems more appropriate

A random thought. Why does anybody need a license to get married? And what determines who should get one, other than a minimum age and not beig Too closely related? It’s not like a license to drive or fly where you have to prove you have learned the rules and acquired the skills to be successful. Or to hunt or fish where you are basically paying a fee for the privelage regardless of whether you know what you are doing, though at least some states do require a hunter’s education course. From what I can tell it basically records an economic contract that theoretically gives some official legal standing to a mutual support arrangement and provides for a legal standing for offspring. Oh, and yes I am married and have been for decades. We were reluctant to ‘get the government involved’, but issues concerning insurance and employers made us decide to “make it official”, and I guess that answers the question.
