When Bil Baird’s puppet troupe toured Afghanistan (long before the Taliban arose), he found himself in a shop where the owner didn’t speak English and Baird didn’t speak the local language, but both of them spoke German. Instead of just speaking German to each other, however, he pulled a puppet out of his pocket and had it act as interpreter. (Remembered from a book on puppetry I read ca 1981)
