In college the calculus teaching assistant smoked and we smoked in his class. In the Student Union 5 cigarette packs were given out free by the major cig companies.

Reminds me of our “official smoking area” outside the gymnasium of our high school. It was a concession that the schoolboard made to student and parent complaints about no allowed smoking areas. It lasted only about half the school year – part of the deal was smokers were responsible for keeping the area clean, but of course they made a big mess of it so the privilege was taken away.

Such simpler days back then. Our high school controversies were the smoking area, and allowing vending machines. High schools around us were dealing with drugs, gangs, and teen pregnancy. Not sure how we managed to be such an isolated oasis, but it didn’t last much longer after our class graduated.

Living in Colorado, I’m amazed at going to scenic mountain overlooks and having people pollute the fresh mountain air with their cigarettes.

In college, I had a class in a building that had an auditorium where nursing classes were held (I was not a nursing student). The building had a lobby outside the auditorium and I usually would wait in the lobby for my class to start. The nursing classes were broken up into two periods and the nursing students got a break after the first period. One day while they were having their break, they all piled into the lobby and, seemingly in unison, lit up a cigarette. It got too hard to breathe after awhile and I had to go outside to get some fresh air. This was in the middle of winter,

One company I worked for designated the areas in front of the doors as smoking areas, meaning everyone had to walk thru a cloud of smoke entering or exiting the building. I pointed out that company rules stated the designated smoking areas had to be covered but they ignored me even though an area like that already existed. It wasn’t until I cited that they were in violation of state law and threatened to get corporate legal involved that they moved the smoking area. I did this thru unsigned memos in the suggestion box because I was a contract worker and management had voiced their displeasure over my first memo (also unsigned). Yes, they were petty enough to fire me and put training certification in jeopardy had they known it was me.

When I was in college in the 70s, a T.A. smoked the whole time he was teaching us. He used a trashcan as an ashtray. He started a paper fire – twice. It was a course in Public Speaking. I don’t remember a single thing about it, except the fires and the suspense of waiting for the next one.
