I admittedly use this phrase, but I also have an explanation: I grew up seeing people for as they are, not what they look like. I have Black friends who shared tales of their own racisms they experienced, as well as their ancestry of it. I have Latino friends who I’ve seen get looked down on and treated as “lesser than” because they weren’t white. I have Asian family who were married into my family that were treated as unintelligent or stereotyped as this or that. Growing up, I decided I wanted it to end with me. I’m colorblind because your color does not matter to me. You are my friends. You are my family. THAT’S what I see. As long as you are a good person that tries to do right by others, any other details about you is absolutely secondary.
I definitely understand the point. “You’re very intelligent” (for a black man). Someone told my wife one time “you’re pretty sharp for a woman.” I saw a FB post within the past month with a picture of a woman and the caption was “she is very beautiful for such a dark skinned woman.” Someone else reposted and said they could’ve just stopped with the word beautiful.
I don’t what color you are, and if your restaurant was in my area, I’d probably visit it one day. Your color is only an issue when you make it one. However, If I’m robbed getting to your restaurant, I won’t be colorblind when I talk to the police.
A little more education needed. That’s not what “begs the question” means (hint – it has nothing to do with a question). Look it up – there’s a whole web site about it.
