But really … what a lovely analogy. Finding the balance between feeling joy in a new level of friendship and and not showing it to the point where Kevin would get snarky and mock.
Last time I saw a deer before it saw me, when it finally noticed me I waved and said “hello”. It stared at me for a few seconds like I was crazy, then walked away.
So, what Miles is saying is that he’s happy that he and Kevin have something in common, but he’s also afraid of judgement because of their shared interests.
Kinda like when I told someone on here that I recognized their new avatar and liked the tv show it was taken from (an overall positive comment). But right after that, they pulled the avatar and I never saw it again. I wouldn’t be that sensitive.
While my dachshund and I were taking an evening walk along a River Trail I saw a deer walking in the shallow creek. It looked up at us a couple times but it never darted off. It just walked slowly, surveying the area and then walked casualing into the woods. What a beautiful nature sight to see!!
Yes, this is a critical moment, Miles. It calls for a certain detachment, and casually introducing bits and pieces of your world as if merely coincidental, but in conjunction with his progress with the story. Yesterday was a major faux pax. You can’t just go around flexing your muscles unless they’ve already bought a ticket to the event.

Kevin is the deer. Use an arc welder for the headlights. That should be enough to get his attention.

Do not try that with a moose … or a bear.
