At my health club men’s locker room, the old guys stroll freely about with no shame, but the young guys hide behind their towels.

Is Horace shocked by the comparison of his and the statue.. hard to see how it could be a contest.

At some time in the distant past of human history no one was socialized to respond as Horace does. At some other point it became (and remains) a nearly ubiquitous reaction.
