People wanted to see the best athletes available; not just the best athletes who can’t make a living at it.

Is this an Olympic year? Have hey occurred? Are they over? I guess I missed them.

Ratings shouldn’t have anything to do with it.

Only because NBC repeated the broadcast ad nauseam!

unfortunately, it was our amateur (kids) against communist adults, to help propagate the myth that the communist way of life was the better way.

In 1972, enabled by corrupt FIBA officials, a bunch of commie pro thugs, er, athletes “beat” a team of amateurs, coached by an over-the-hill coach.

The “miracle on ice” was so thrilling because it was amateurs beating pros.

I think some time about 1980, maybe ’84, NBC realized they had an enormous potential audience that could be added, i.e. women. So, they inundated the Olympics with sob stories, er, I mean individual profiles, about participants who overcame handicaps of various kinds and added sports like synchronized swimming and diving, including individual synchronized swimming, rhythmic gymnastics, and the like.

Off to the races, so to speak with the ratings.

And no doubt the Olympic women’s basketball ratings would have zoomed up even further if they had let Caitlin in!

The WNBA and US Womens Olympic basketball coaches screwed up. The attendance figures made that clear. What was also clear was their hypocrisy as they have taken rookies several times. Caitlin was more deserving than over half that team. Griner should never have been on the team given her remarks about the USA prior to her jail time in Russia.
