Yes it is beneficial for the ground. In high school we had an offensive lineman who topped 300 pounds as sophomore. Coach was always telling him to move around because he was killing the grass.
Not so very good for the knees, long term. Nothing more painful to watch than an aged jogger, obviously in great pain and barely able to hobble, still unable to give up his or her addiction and still not have a clue …
