My wife and I had a meal like that once. Expensive restaurant in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Pheasant under glass. Small piece of pheasant, a half of a twice baked potato and 4 asparagus spears= $50.00. We went to a Burger King before heading back home.
I have definitely been there. Once, to the horror of the maitre d’ of the restaurant we were leaving. I had asked him where we could go nearby to get a decent meal.
I have been there. As a vegetarian, many restaurants assume that you are on a diet, and provide a meal smaller than their kids meals – but very elegantly plated. They also tend to assume that food without meat is flavorless, and they should pile on the spice. Sometimes the results are all but inedible, at least to my palate.

Portray anything exclusive and you can get people to pay a premium for it, even while you make them spurn worthwhile things.

Baked figs with feta and bacon wasn’t enough.

And of course, they paid a small fortune for their fancy ‘meal’.
