I haven’t gone “leaf peeking” in years. There was a certain paved road we would visit every so often that was lined on both sides with American sweetgum.
We have the Maple Leaf Festival over in Baldwin City, KS. I’ve never been brave enough to go. The traffic is insane—and I grew up in the South Chicago suburbs.
One of the few things I miss since moving to San Diego is the fall colors. Then a couple of months later when the snows hit in the upper Midwest, I remember why I moved here in the first place.
Ah yes. Those childhood memories of jumping in a pile of leaves. And the smell of those leaves burning when your grandfather raked them up into a pile and lit them on fire.
I remember that John Steinbeck asked a New England woman if she ever became bored with the fall colors. She told him, “…it is a glory, and can’t be remembered, so it always comes as a fresh surprise.”

I don’t think I’ve seen leaves quite that shade of purple that Pasquale’s guardian angel has come up with, though.

The kid is too young to enjoy the importance of different colors and shades. For now he can just enjoy soft landing on a pile of leaves.
