Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for May 10, 2009
Transcript:
Mike: Wow... extra fees for everything! You'd think panels would be in the basic package! Hi, folks... as you may have just noticed, today this newspaper is switching over to basic Doonesbury! Because of rising costs, it's just not possible to offer all the great features you've come to expect from this strip. Fortunately, all is not lost! If you call right now, you can upgrade to premium Doonesbury, which gives you access to special add-ons, like full color... Zonker: Wow! Look at that! Mike: ... And eye-popping background art, like this stunning sunset in Washington's Cascades! Zonker: Wow... Mike: And for a few pennies more, you can sign up for Doonesbury Platinum, giving you full access to our top supporting cast members... and, of course, our hilarious trademark punchlines! Zonker: I mean, who do you think I am - Octomom? Mike: Call now and we'll throw in extra subtext - free!

Of course, if you are in Ellensburg the Sun sets in the cascades; if you are in Seattle, the Sun sets in the Olympics.

I wouldnt call either Duke or Roland Hedley as top supporting cast members. They just take up space until the good stories roll around.

And if you are anywhere at all, the sun sets in the west.

And if you’re in the Milwaukee area, the sun set on “Doonesbury” many months ago, when the Journal Sentinel dropped it, along with much else.

a bit of irony here….this strip was edited in today’s indianapolis Star… the first two panels were eliminated (they just cut em out- who needs em?) and once again, they used the space they saved by blowing up a one panel strip (mallard fillmore) to the same size as doonsburys’ eight panel…uh…excuse me .. I mean SIX panel strip!

I get my newspaper in the morning, so the error must have been that Mike meant to say “sunrise.” The Seattle times (now the only daily left here) cuts the first panels out of Doonesbury too.

I would pay extra to NOT see Duke.

Today’s strip defines “The Creative Process” altho not in so many words. Trudeau knows! Doonsbery Rocks! I’ve been reading & loving it for at least 30 years. Thanks Garry

If Mike Doonesbury really lives in Seattle or any of its suburbs such as Renton or Bellevue, he will not be looking at a sun SET behind the CASCADES. The Cascades are EAST of Seattle. Perhaps he means the OLYMPICS, which are located on the Olympic Penninsula WEST of Seattle, between Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean. Look at a map!

The comics are in color in daily newspapers partly because other parts of the paper are in color (thanks to USA Today… St. Louis was one of the few who ran color comics daily long ago)
Partly they are in color to entice readers.
As for coloring, computer programs can easily apply colors as another layer of art. Instead of a cartoonist numbering colors as in the olden days, now a preset palette can color a strip fairly quickly.
I’d pay extra for hyperlinked footnotes. (Click on “Octomom” or “John Dean” and get instant information. Click on a character and get a access to all strips featuring that character.

Apparently someone already did, if you got the colors, extra cast, subtext, punchline, and all the rest…
