I frequently walk on a local walking trail. I once saw an youngish woman walking along reading from an actual book, a hardcover, I believe. Of course, I don’t know if she kept it up for her entire walk. And from a safety standpoint, I’m not sure that it was better than a phone.
Many years ago the same kind of cartoon was on Go Comics. Cop entering a stopped bus with one person reading a book. ‘Put it down slowly’ cop said with pistol raised.
More and more, I feel detached from… and disgusted with… this new world in which almost everyone devotes most of their waking existence to staring mindlessly at their phones. I do own a cellphone but rarely use it or even turn it on. It seemed a marvelous invention when it was used for its original intended purpose… making or receiving calls away from home … but has become a blight on civilization by enslaving the human race to its insidious attraction.
The most subversive thing in the world is an idea. Books are repositories of ideas. Authoritarian regimes have always known this. Therefore, to preempt subversion, ban books.

When I was working in NYC and rode the subway a lot, I kept a small paperback in my pocket all the time.

I feel that way when I’m reading my library book in a waiting room surrounded by a bunch of bent-necks.

Clever commentary but books aren’t quite that obscure, yet.
