I’ve been avoiding retail locations for a couple of weeks, but THREE weeks ago they still had empty places where the XMAS stuff would be put that evening. I was slightly surprised to still find winter clothing.
I understand the retail thought process that causes this. Many of the seasonal items aren’t returnable and companies are trying to reduce clearance sell-offs because of limited warehouse space.
This is dangerously close to reality. The stores I visit don’t actually fully switch to the next holiday until after the actual holiday has passed, thankfully, but it does seem like they start promoting for the next holiday sooner and sooner every year, to the point it at times DOES feel like the stores are out of sync with the rest of the world’s timeline. I dunno, maybe all of their clocks run fast?
I remember looking for a bathing suit just before Memorial Day and could not find one, the gal said you have to get them in February for best selection. insane!
Don’t get mad at the retailers what they stock or what holidays they open on.
Supply and demand is a two-way street. If the demand is not profitable enough, the supply doesn’t happen.
We the consumers have the power to return holiday sales back to their relative holidays, and to ask stores to close on major holidays. We have, instead, thrown money at retailers that do the opposite.
Retail is always one season ahead, we sell summer clothes in spring, autumn wear in summer, etc. The idea is that people buy their stuff ahead of time so they’ll have it later on. Of course, holiday items are sold before the holiday in question, but there is NO WAY a retailer is going to take their holiday stuff down before the holiday actually happens, that is literally throwing money away.
while the thanksgiving/christmas/new year stuff is out earlier and earlier, no retailer worth anything removes halloween candy (or valentines or easter candy) until the day after the holiday.
way too many last minute buyers who pay good money for it.

Yeah, it is really ridiculous to sell Christmas stuff in October

For the past 20+ years, I have been able to get a Cadbury Creme Egg on New Years Day.

A bit absurd, but mostly true.

Actually, every supermarket and drugstore I have been to lately is still stocked full of Halloween candy.
This would have been the perfect time for a crossover: “Who makes your stocking decisions, anyway?” (bring out Ralph’s wife from “Drabble” here)

Retail is taking the happy Xmas time out of Xmas time. By December we’ll all be sick and tired of the season. Boooo.

It’s a Supply Chain issue. The procurement experts are still clearing their minds of odd interruptions caused by unforeseen pandemic supply demands.

Ever watch the “Evening News?”….
It seems to be the new NATIONAL PASTIME….
