I used to hear multifarious bird calls coming from an unseen bird in a tree, and automatically assume it was a mockingbird. Then I found out that brown thrashers also mimic other birds as well, even better than mockingbirds. So I no longer assume that.
It turns out to be a lot harder than one would think to identify birds. Unless you have some bright, male, Spring plumage to go on, there are literally a lot of “gray areas”. Birds don’t breed into easily classifiable markings categories.
