But does anyone, besides cartoonists, still use white-out or Liquid Paper?

I woulda started with Love Is, but that’s just me.

Why use a tiny brush when you can use a power sprayer with acrylic Kilz primer? It hides all of the evidence and is ready for a new artwork topcoat.
