I used to have a similar Saturday wake up routine with my kids. The difference was I blasted “Fuel” by Metallica or “Shipping Up to Boston” by The Dropkick Murphys for their waking enjoyment. Memories that last a lifetime…
My wake up call at 0600 every morning aboard ship: “Reveille, reveille, all hands heave to and trice up. (Blurb about another activity that may be banned here). Now reveille!”
As an air force brat my Dad would play Wild Blur Yonder the air force theme. He had a John Phillip Sousa LP that he loved to play on his Hi FI Stereo from the 1950s.
I guess I was more lucky than some. As a child, my mom would sit on the edge of my bed, gently turn me so she could reach a cheek or my forehead, then plant a mommy-kiss on that surface. “Hi, light of my life!” she’d say. “It’s time to be up and about. Up and at ’em. Breakfast is on the way.”
Mother intended to be obeyed. She also had a ping-pong paddle. If I wasn’t down the stairs for breakfast as it hit the table (usually about 10 to 15 minutes later), I could count on it that she’d climb the stairs with that paddle in hand, whip off the covers, and apply it (just once, without further warning) to my posterior. That was very seldom necessary, though. On the few occasions when she did this, I came down to a cold breakfast that had been put in the fridge.
Strict? Yes, of course. But it taught me lessons that were very valuable in life.
Choices. Consequences. Real life, because no one else was going to mollycoddle me.

Waking up as an obligation can be difficult, regardless of how sweet the song that’s causing you to stir awake.

It’s either that, or a glass of water poured in his ear.
