When jet skis started becoming popular decades ago, they were much louder than now. Some lakes and towns started banning them due to the noise.

2 stroke engines make more horsepower than 4 stroke engines but they are loud and are not good for the environment. Kenny Roberts’ Yamaha TZ750 had a top speed of 150 mph, fast in the mid 1970s.
