I have never, ever, used algebra, so what was the point of my memorizing a whole bunch of equations so I could pass the exam?

When professional mathematicians try to convey to the rest of us why they love it, how fascinating and fun it is for them, I don’t recall them ever using algebra to illustrate the point.

My brother was a math teacher – he said it is not so much the math itself, but the critical thinking you had to use to learn it. That stays with most people all their life.
