It’s a salute of a sort, though not very complementary.

Coulda been worse… they could’ve given Henry the “two fingers up” salute.

Good morning, crew – put your forks down!

Nate as well, huh? Well, I guess he had to take some responsibilities after Seahawk’s disappearance.

Seems to me that there are worse ‘salutes’ Henry could be receiving.

A naval salute is very different from an Army or Air Force salute: the palm of the hand in facing down. It was developed to hide the tar on their hands, picked up when tugging on the-coated ropes (which abound on sailing vessels).

Is that zucchini in the bag? Even there people are trying to get rid of extra zucchini.

Sea service wants you to keep your hands too busy to salute. First time you see them today if you’re outside & wearing a hat. Otherwise keep working.

A reference to “snook-cocking New Critics” is where I first learned that the crew’s gesture is known as “cocking a snook” as well as “thumbing one’s nose,” or, as I now discover, “giving the five-finger salute” (or four-finger, in this instance).

Given that they’re pirates, I’m not sure military rank and order factor into it much. The deadliest one rules the lot, or something like that.

At least it wasn’t a middle finger salute.
