I once heard a Jewish academic talk about this story, and the first thing he said was along the lines of, “Geez, people, there was no talking snake. It was a freaking metaphor. Nobody took this stuff literally back then. They told stories to make a point.” Then he went on to say the story was a metaphor growing up and leaving the innocence of childhood behind. You gain knowledge, but you lose the paradise of innocence…and you have to work.
