Reminds me a bit of “Romeo and Juliet”, where the Capulets and Montagues were feuding for generations, and nobody could remember why or what started it.

This story thread would make a good Star Trek episode. Capt. Kirk could solve it in one hour.

If he were really committed to peace, he would leave the scores un-settled.

That applies to the Balkans too. They never forget anything, and definitely not the offenses. « They suffer from too much history », said Churchill.Works for the Corsicans too, in my country.

The rest of the world have long memories that rarely forgive acts from the past. Even Western countries like the UK and France keep their ancient pasts fresh in mind and act accordingly. In the U.S. our memory lasts about 3 to 5 weeks, as evidenced by our last election. Germany and Japan were business partners within 6 months of war’s end, Vietnam a partner now, and a U.S. president walked arm-in-arm with the leader of North Korea across their border. We are such a forgiving country. For cash.

A Lebanese postdoc I worked with in 1985 told me the fighting there at the time was just old family feuds with a new excuse.
