    CARRYOVER FROM YESTERDAY

    pschearer, Ji2m;

    Named for the respected huntsman Rev. John Russell, the Parson Russell Terrier was first bred in the south of England in the mid-1800s to hunt red fox. Traditionally, the Parson followed the fox underground to flush him out for the hunter. Authorities claim that after Rev. Russell’s death some of his bloodlines were crossed with the Welsh Corgi and other terrier breeds, creating a different type dog, the “Jack Russell Terrier.” The parent club for the breed requested a name change from Jack Russell to Parson Russell Terrier.

    My husky seems to be afraid of water (except for bath time).

    JonD: Yes, I read that too. But it comes from the website of the AKC which seems to have decided that only the “Parson” breed is genuine and the “Jack” breed doesn’t meet their standards. (Note there is no reference to the Jack Russell parent club.) It’s like descendants of the Mayflower looking down their noses at anyone who came later.

    While the AKC’s prestige and influence is huge, apparently a lot of “Jack” breeders and fans don’t agree. I predict that eventually there will be enough documentation of “Jack” bloodlines and the AKC will cave and recognize the “Jack” as a breed alongside the “Parson”.

    (Not that I really care. I don’t like yappy dogs anyway. The only dogs I like are those that most resemble the wolf ancestors, any dog that works for a living, and dachsies because they’re so cute and forgive us for making them dwarfs.)
