I suspect the real writer was fat about 2 feet lower and on his back.

After decades of dealing with all the tropes about “Better give her a gift – she does not mean it when she says she does not want anything” I finally convinced husband that when I say I don’t want anything – I mean it. He buys himself a gift for me to wrap and give him. (When we used to go out of the house without the other person I could actually buy him gifts, but now I go out once a month to my embroidery club meeting, and went once for jury duty, but otherwise the furthest apart we get is, as right now, when I am on my laptop in the kitchen and he is on his desktop in our home office. So how can I surprise him with a gift?)

So he buys his gift when he figures out what he wants. We buy a gift for his younger niece. (All other niblings are in their late 20s or older so we no longer buy them gifts – and we don’t see them, we also do not buy gifts for our siblings. )

This year was strange though. He never found anything anything he wanted – so no gift purchased. I came across a US$3.50 bear at Target for my bear collection and after walking around the store for about 45 minutes looking at stuff (for him) he talked me into letting him buy the bear for me. So our gift giving was backwards this year!
