I know of several people who race motorcycles on ice. They hammer long roofing nails through the tires to provide traction. I think they’re beyond crazy!
Living in Wisconsin and always running outdoors (never at the gym) I wear my Icebugs running shoes with the metal spikes in the soles. Can run across solid ice with no problems. I just have to be careful in the house on tile to get outdoors because the spikes are slippery on tila and bare floors.
I’m sure your orthopedic surgeon will be delighted to know you’re back to doing the same activity that caused your injury in the first place. More $$$$ for the doc, y’know.
I don’t like gyms, walking was my usual but I just bought a bicycle – single speed Fixie and after reading GoComics I am going out for a ride;) I rode for years but got out of it, Yesterday I rode for 17 minutes and burned 240 calories (29 lb bike). 20 minutes today and hopefully my legs adjust to the workload. Next week I will add 10 more and the same each week until I can ride for an hour.

Or you could always just not run and swim, row, ski, or cycle instead.

Treadmills have the advantage that they work more on the cardio than on leg strength.

William Shatner should wear his star trek uniform when visiting the gym. He’d be boldly going where no treadmill has gone before.

I think you can remove “on ice” and still draw the same conclusion.

Sometimes you have a conversation just for the social interaction. At least at my age, that is true.
When you retire and no longer have to interact with people for your job, you make other interactions count.
