Re: Separating “Slop” (insider Farm Humor): Another farm story - but not about body functions.
“Goin’ out to Slop the Pigs” is a phrase I don’t hear so often living in the City. One of my chores as a kid was to “Feed the Pigs” involved taking a container of left-over table scraps & toss them in their Feed Trough.
Therefore “Separating Your Slop into Different Piles” takes on a different meaning than when U purchase your Pig/Hog feed from some “Major Manufacturing Processed Animal Feed Company” and add water (makes a different kind of Slop).
GJ_Jehosaphat - My father also raised hogs, so I know what you mean. He had enough that we had to use processed animal feed most of the time, but I know from experience hogs will eat anything they can chew.
grazer - I think that bacon gets all it’s “flavor” from the list of ingredients on the package.
A more “whether or not Real Flavor-FULL” Taste Test of where your pork comes from would be by the taste of (say) side pork strips or chops. The family farm I remember in the 50’s & 60’s had a variety of animals - cows, calves, horses, pigs, chickens, and sometimes turkeys (besides my turkey of a brother ;-))
Today’s mass produced hogs kept restricted in in-door contained in small pens R NOT the same. I’m NOT a PETA Person — although I understand what their talking about — the Pork Produced TODAY is pretty much “flavor-LESS.
So I’m off to the Local Country Fair today - here’s my PSA for supporting smaller, local family farms who know the “old-timer” ways of raising animals. If U don’t live in the country where U can raise your own (take them to folks who process meat - believe me, U don’t want to do “THAT” by yourselves) — Go & support the folks at the Farmer’s Market (or ask for directions to one close to home).
This PSA is also for folks who like their Fruits & Vegis to be Flavor-Full too ;-))

Amazing how bacon turns out so well after what it’s been through.
