Too small! The last two lines of the picket sign, maybe even the antepenultimate, are illegibly small, and this old rerun strip has no working Zoom function, either! Maybe we shouldjoin with the BCCA in their strike! To the streets!
Back in the day, there was an issue about newspapers making comics physically smaller and smaller – to leave more room for ad space, of course. A number of the artists got very up in arms about this, claiming it was killing their art. Breathed and Treaudeau were among the leaders of this movement.
The problem still exists today in my local paper, most notably in the Sunday comics section. Garfield takes up at least twice the space of Grand Avenue, and there’s usually way more dialogue in GA. My eyes are fine, but sometimes I have to work to read many of the strips. Not sure if it’s an individual newspaper decision, or whether the artist/syndicate has the influence.
Oh, what a happy coincidence that these old Bloom County strips are among the few that GoComics doesn’t offer in a (higher resolution) zoomable version.
Ironic having no zoom function. It has never been enabled on this strip. One other strip I read on here “One Big Happy” also has no zoom function. GOCOMICS, tell us why? Does the cartoonist have to pay extra for it? Of course they COULD make the picture bigger, but then they’d have LESS room for revenue advertising, hmmmm? Always comes back to the money, doesn’t it?

No, I think it’s a picket sign.

Yes! The fact that Bloom County is one of the few comics still lacking the zoom feature on GoComics gives new relevance to this old strip!

Yep, back when comic size was restricted by paper & you couldn’t save & blow up (or just zoom in on) the strips. Those poor, ancient primitives! :-P

Oh man, I had completely forgotten about Spuds MacKenzie.
