Smoking in public was made socially acceptable from the decades-long glamorization in movies, tv and magazines. One could smoke in theaters; airlines used to give complimentary 4-packs of cigarets with meals. Maybe the rising cost of health care due to smoking is the reason tobacco companies were forced to discontinue advertising.
