I’ve been comparing notes with Dypak over on NAQV on battlefield poetry, so am quite ready to choke up. (I visited my father’s grave today – WWII veteran, Battle of the Atlantic, and his birthday tomorrow.)

Marg, you have the middle front seat! Carmy has the driver’s side window, back seat. Sounds like yyyguy wants to ride in the bed. Since, Terry hasn’t committed yet we may need to tie him to the bumper and drag him along.

Marg, around here “pigs in a blanket” is ground beef and rice wrapped in cabbage leaves and covered with a sweet and sour tomato sauce. you want that for breakfast?

JPS, my uncles were WWII vets from the Battle of the Bulge.

*Just plain Steve, my mom was a Lt in the Army Nurse Corp in WW2.

Dry as far as i know (not that i cook), what you describe as “pigs in a blanket” would be called cabbage rolls in this neck of the woods.

Gotcha now! I realized it when i saw the “bed” comment. I was getting all fuzzy about going in a tank too!

Pigs in a blanket are a few different things. Two that I know of besides what Dry mentioned are:

Sausages rolled up in cresent rolls or pancakes. Hot dogs cooked in cresent rolls on a cookie sheet.

Well with that I am calling it a night. I promised a friend I would drive them to their doctor’s appointment.

DF, Terry & Doc - Good Morning to you fine gentlemen. It is certainly not my bag. I have not been to the gym in years.

Terry - We are getting 40 MPH winds with gusts up to 60. I have hauled out the kerosene lamps and a camp lantern. I will be getting the fireplace ready too. We have so many cedars, douglas fir & hemlocks, that power on the lake goes out regularly at this time of year . November is our windiest month. At least it is 54 degrees out right now.

If I disappear you all will know why.

Good luck with the invite, Wink. You’re nothing if not big, umm, hearted. … Yeah, that’s it. Sorry I missed the IHOP run. Sounds like you had a bang-up time with the tank and all. Off to tour the toons. See all y’all around the neighborhood.

Doc - I see the snow you got is moving into Kansas. I hope you’re happy! (Thanks for at least holding off until my relatives made it home.) Cleo - Sounds like you’re getting KS type weather. I know that if there is freezing precipation, coupled with our usual wind, the power will probably go off. We’ve got a total electric house, and the pump for our well requires electricity, so when a storm is forecast, I try to make sure to have plenty of water (especially for flushing) and firewood. We installed the wood stove for Y2K, but it has come in handy more than once when the power’s been out for days. It has a cooktop & an oven, so it has been great for emergencies. I hope you have sufficient emergency supplies on hand. (Oil lamps are good to have, too.)

cleo**, if you lose power, lighting kerosene or camping lanterns in the house can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning!! NO COMBUSTION INDOORS!!! It is an ALL TOO COMMON story here in the PNW!!

I think there was a Doc sighting at Mutt & Jeff. I didn’t think he was that short though. My first impression was Cleo but then I realized the guy has clothes on. Hi RMom. Good to see you. I remember the windy ice storms from my short spell working in Lawrence. Not pleasant but beautiful!

Rmom - Good Morning. We at least have a propane range. That helps a lot. But being without water is the biggest pain.

Good morning (almost afternoon) friends! Dcguys - Ice storms are very pretty to look at, but horrible otherwise. Cleo - Good thing you have a lake. There is a small river near us, but the water isn’t too accessible. (The banks are steep, and there’s a hill to climb as well.) My plan with ice storms is to be able to survive at home for a couple of days. Usually by then, the roads are cleared enough, so we’ll go somewhere else to stay until our power is back on.

Howdy bmonk, yyyguy and serena - So far the wind isn’t to bad. Famous last words.

yeah, ice storms are no fun. we had a big one in Eastern Canada several years back that people still remember with no fondness. i remember scary photos of hydro towers buckled by the ice covering them, among other things. at least it didn’t affect me too badly - but i live in an urban area where repairs were relatively easy. some areas went weeks with no power. hope you don’t get hit.

@Rmom, I agree about Ice Storms. But even prettier is when there’s a fog at about freezing–it coats the trees so nicely, and usually lightly enough so they don’t get all busted up. Lovely silver (and often with golden grass) views…

@bmonk about 20 years ago i owned a house with a plum tree in the corner of the yard. we had a small amount of freezing rain one day that coated it just as you describe. i still have the photo i took in a box some where. thanks for the reminder.

I like dogs with personality. I no of some that are like zombies, little interaction and boring. I like a dog that will make eye contact.

Similar looking but the Shiba Inu breed is smaller in size. It was bred for hunting whereas the husky is more of a pulling/working breed.

You had me looking up my old campground in the keys where I spent my winters. Knight’s Key Campground is still in existence. Gosh I had some great times there. They have a little bar, restaurant where I used to play pool every evening. Those were the good days the early 70’s, which is when I saw Jimmy Buffet playing at an open mike in Key West. Then bam he became a star.

I have a bad story from my time in the Keys. From what I remember and what others tell me! LOL

As your plane touches down, we get in our convertible rental car. Head to Duval street and turn off when you see Capt. Tonys. Unfortunately he died a year ago. But I loved the old guy. I still remember playing pool and getting a ball stuck in the return. Not wanting to hurt the table, I let him know. He came over lifted up the table and let it drop. That’s the only bar where I actually sat next to a skunk at the counter.

Is that when you were naked on Duval during fantasy fest.

No wait, I guess that was me. LOL

Just a hint……………I recognized a cop when I went to see the judge! Good thing I was prior military and so was the judge!

I’m sure there is a tree somewhere in the Keys that I donated for! LOL

Key West is so laid back that the only things that I can imagine seeing one for are theft and murder. LOL

In 1972 or 73, spent New Year’s Eve there. There had been hints of riots possible in Ft. Lauderdale and they decided to take no chances in Key West either, so they lined the entire length of the bar area on Duval with cops, highway patrol an military all standing on both sides of the street with their arms linked, at attention. Well, nobody riots in Key West. So everyone just carried on as usual, swaying down the sidewalks, getting drunker and slinking under the human barricade to cross streets to visit other bars. it was fun but bizarre.

Last thing I remember well was the Bar Crawl on Duval St and us getting seperated and ………………………………………!

johnny, I took a vacation day today, talked to a dear friend on the phone who called, cleaned out my fridge, made banana bread, and go back to work tmr. to do something I haven’t done in about 18 years! I have to take the minutes for a board meeting! Hope I remember how! I know to keep attendance and who made what motions to do what, but our board gets chatty, so I hope I can keep up with what’s important and what’s just some old farts talking about drival!

Hi JFri! Hungry much? Daughters 2 and 3 are in band. They were practicing earlier. #2 plays flute, she’s in her 3rd year. She was playing some Christmas songs and the scales. She’s trying out for All District this Thursday. Daughter #3 is playing the drums, she’s a beginner. She was playing on her practice snare. You would think that would have made me bonkers, but they both sounded pretty good.

Good job, JFri! Johnny, I played the castanets in the 2nd grade, clarinet in the 6th and sang in the choir in 9th. I used to try to play the drums to accompany my husband while he played lead guitar. The only song I could kind of play was “We Got the Beat” by the Go-Go’s.
