good morning Tribe hey DocT & Rmom, more drawbacks of home schooling include not being able to stay home sick when you aren’t really that ill, and not being able to cut a boring class to go down to the cafeteria and play euchre. also, no-one to cheat off when you write a difficult test. not that i ever needed to do any of those things (except cut boring classes to go to the cafeteria and play cards).

Good afternoon, Terry, Yguy, Shika, Doc, Dry, bmonk & Cleo!

Doc - The only cheating my sons ever tried was the older one tried to cheat on his spelling test. Since his spelling isn’t a strong point of his, I grew suspicious when he got 100% on the test. Busted!

Yguy - True, my kids had to be lethargic in order to have a sick day. (Unless Mom was too sick to teach.) But on the other hand, if they were sick, all the deadlines for their assignments were pushed back, so they didn’t have extra work trying to get caught up. My kids have been tardy lots of times, but never played hooky. Kind of hard when I know where to find them. Of course, there are lots of perks as well - no shoes, comfortable clothing, Mom’s cooking for lunch, no group showers for gym class, no school bus…

Not too bad here. However, the wind just came up, which usually means the weather will change. I just checked the forecast - slightly cooler, but not real bad. It is up around 50 F here today - a nice change from last week!! I’ll be scarce for the next couple of days or so - I’ve got to go into Wichita and work on my mom’s house, so the realtor can take inside pictures.

Thanks! It could be worse, I suppose. My mom was a packrat, but a very tidy, organized one. My sister (who was Mom’s primary caregiver) is the most chaotic packrat I’ve ever seen. Reportedly (by a brother) she was working on getting her bedroom there cleaned out yesterday. I hope so, because if her stuff is still lying around on the floor, I’m just throwing it all into boxes. My brother was there doing whatever projects I could delegate for him to do. Unfortunately, my sister adds lower-priority tasks to his list. I hope everything gets done this week, that NEEDS to be done right away. It is difficult being the baby of the family, but having all the responsibility sometimes - especially when they don’t let me lead.

@Rmom. I feel for you. Reportedly, we had (have) some legendary packrats in our family.

One Aunt’s home had three or four large boxes in the attic, carefully labeled and chock full of “Pieces of string too small to use.” And they were: all too small to use, which is why the were never used, just stored away–in case anyone at some future moment needed one, or 100 thousand, pieces of string too small to use.

bmonk - LOL! We threw out a lot of fabric scraps that were too small to use in our opinion. I’m sure Mom had a good reason for saving them (she made a lot of quilts). But I don’t recall anything that she labeled as being “too small to use”.

Did I hear the term pack rat? My parents saved everything. I know I have mentioned this before, but when I went to sell their house I had to go through everything, Including every card that they had ever gotten, because I found money in some of them. For eight weeks it was my seven day a week job with 8 weeks of dumpster pickups and mass recycling and eight weeks of 3 day garage sales.

Cleo - My Mom saved every card, but I’ve never found any money in them yet, even though I go through them to make sure there isn’t something I should save. The only money I’ve found is loose change. This would probably be easier if I had 8 weeks that I could work at it full-time, but with homeschooling, that isn’t possible.

Terry - Both my mom & my MIL were/are quilters. However, my MIL likes to make those pretty coordinated kind that are frequently hung on the wall. My mom’s quilts were pretty, but meant to be used. My family has always preferred the quilts my mom made, because they had a cuddly quality my MIL’s don’t seem to have. That, and she rarely left a pin in her sewing projects, where my MIL does that basically every project.

    Hibye celecca.

Rmom the final part of the house that I cleaned out was the attic and I found a wooden ammo box up there filled with silver coins my parents would save when we got one in our country grocery store.

celecca - I hear you! Homeschooling is a lot of work, but much of the time it is just making sure my son is on-task, and to answer questions he might have for me. Today I’m doing an Algebra 2 test. Since I’ve never taken that level before (my hubby helped our oldest son to understand it), I’m doing the course alongside my son. We take our tests separately, so I can give him (& myself) honest grades. So, I read an internet page, work a problem, then click on a new page. Not the most efficient way of working, but more enjoyable.

Quilting is one of those hobbies that I’ll probably take up after I’m done with homeschooling, moving, etc. Quilting, scrapbooking & stained glass are the hobbies I haven’t had hardly any time to do for years, but plan to start again when I’m not as busy. (I’ve had to decide which hobbies I’ll take up & which ones I won’t, so I’ll know what stuff of Mom’s to keep, and what to sell.)

bmonk - Did your dad blow the glass, or just cut & assemble glass that’s made by someone else into panels or windows? I’ve made lampshades, but panels/windows are much easier to do. I’ve seen people blow glass, and that is neat. However, I’m trying to only do hobbies that won’t leave a bunch of art sitting around collecting dust. My mom did a lot of china painting (and she was a good artist) but I just don’t have the space for everything she created, so I’m not saving much of the china. However, her paintings on canvas are very valued by us kids, especially ones with ripe wheat in them. I’ve tried my hand at painting, but hers turned out much better than mine.

I’m pretty sure he did stained glass from sheet glass, but he did do the leading himself.

Not sure about the paperweights–I know he mentioned a furnace, but it sounded like the final stage in the process of making one, or sealing the artsy-fartsy-stuff inside, to coin a phrase.

Still, I wouldn’t put it past him, if the opportunity came up, to try his hand at blowing. I know as a chemist, from the 1950s, he was pretty skilled at blowing laboratory glassware as needed.

Terry - So, I can’t use you for a mobile railing when I’m walking on high heels or ice? My husband was just thankful there was a real railing for me to grab at church a couple Sundays ago. I was going down the stairs, started falling, and grabbed for the railing. (I usually hold onto the railings, but evidently not well enough.) I fell on my knees. I was thankful I was wearing pants, it was indoors & on carpet, instead of outdoors on concrete, and in a dress. Way back before kids, one of my co-workers said she enjoyed just watching me walk, because invariably I would do something klutzy. BTW, I hurt my fingers bad enough at church, I had to go wash off the blood & apply Neosporin & band-aid. You know I’m klutzy when those are standard supplies in my purse!

bmonk - I agree! I love to deliberately misconstrue the meanings of words to tease the speaker. I did a little of the leaded method of stained glass, but I prefer wrapping the edges with copper tape, and soldering it together. I haven’t done any since our oldest started crawling on the floor. Something about glass chips and crawling babies just don’t mix well. Now that he’s driving instead of crawling on the floor, I’m too busy with other things.

At least when they are crawling, they have a limited upper reach. When they hit 4-6 feet, there’s very little they can’t get into…

Cleo - I never started smoking mainly because of the cost. Most people who smoke cigarettes seem to get addicted to them, and I figured I could save a lot of money by not starting that habit. At the time, I think packs were 50 cents a piece, but when I was making $3.30 an hour, that seemed like a lot of money.

bmonk - Until they figure out how to push objects over to climb on to get up higher. I will say it was after my son was walking when he got into the most trouble. While he was still at that crawling stage, he was busy pulling out the “child proof” electrical outlets plugs to chew on, and eating half of a cricket.

Rmom - I like sitting down with a friend and having a cigar and either Booker’s, Laphroaig or Stock 84 neat and talking. The cigar soothes as does the alcohol served neat (without ice) and promotes conversation. I have had some very informative, provocative and in depth conversations just sitting and taking a sip and a puff.

I have never had kids, but I have lived in a household with children and they have very enquiring minds that are also keen on discovering what everything is, that they are not familiar with. Little hands do tend to explore.

While I don’t care for cigar smoke, I will say that most cigar smokers aren’t chain-smokers like the majority of cigarette smokers, so that would help. It is one thing to enjoy an occasional (fill in the blank) it is something else to get so addicted that a person will blow their food, rent, etc. money on their addiction, instead of paying their bills.

Terry - I’m proud of you! Everything smells so much better without smoke. My PT Cruiser used to be smoked in, unfortunately. It seems that is a very persistent odor. While I’m not crazy about “air fresheners” it is the only way I can handle the smell inside the car.

Terry, it’s a matter of sitting down and making the decision that enough is enough. I did the same thing in April when I decided that I was going to get back to the weight that I had always been before I moved in with my dad when he was diagnosed with leukemia. He and I had a totally different diet, but I didn’t want to have to make two different meals every night and slowly I put on weight. I never got fat, but I didn weigh more than I felt comfortable with.

    Congratulations, Terry!

I’ve never been tempted to smoke–but my dad quit one day. He only smoked at work, but he opened a pack when he arrived about 5 or 6 a.m. By 10 a.m. there were three left, so he figured it was time to quit. He gave them to another smoker, told him not to offer or lend him any if he asked, and quit.

But I also hear that it’s one of the strongest addictions, in various ways.

bmonk - It doesn’t surprise me that smoke can still be smelled 15 or 20 years later, especially on something that can’t be washed. As far as I know, neither one of my parents smoked, however, they both had brothers who did at some point. (No smokers in the family by the time I was old enough to realize.) My sister is an occasional smoker. At least she’s very considerate to not smoke in Mom’s house or anywhere like that. She probably doesn’t realize that I can tell she still smokes occasionally - she told me about 30 years ago that she only smoked when she was partying, but ever so often since then, I’ve seen/smelled evidence that she hasn’t stopped. I figure as long as she’s considerate about it, I’m not going to nag her.

Rmom said, “It doesn’t surprise me that smoke can still be smelled 15 or 20 years later, especially on something that can’t be washed.”

Not only not washable, but sealed up in an archive document box, so not much air transfer.

But odors are said to bring back memories better than any other sense.

Terry & Cleo - I think you’re right about it being very important to do it for yourself. I might eat the way the doctor orders me to, but I just can’t stay with it long enough to make it a lifestyle, unless I think it is important to me. I’m thinking once school is over, I’m going to have to do something to get more active. Problem is that my feet are allergic to shoes. (Laugh, but I’m serious!) I’ve never played Wii, but think I’ll look into that when I’m ready to start my exercise program. What all will I need in addition to the actual Wii and how much will it cost? Large screen TV? Software? (Also, gotta figure out where in the house I can exercise without knocking something over in the process.)

I would hope Tabby’s not a zombie–I would seriously hate it if anyone had to harm her to stop her from eating us…

Okay Johnny, so what do you think of the matchups this week? I started out in FF in 4th, moved to 3rd, won my first playoff, ended up 5th, but heck, that was FUN!! Sorry you didn’t make first! You were there all season! I hope Akenta does this again!

I did now. I knew I wouldn’t win, and I probably could have gotten or even first had I had the internet the last two weeks. It was fun though, I wouldn’t mind doing that again.

Why did you think you wouldn’t win? You seem to REALLY know this FF! Better than anyone! Did you see the Packer game on Sunday? That was great! Really exciting game! Had to listen to the first 3 qtrs. on radio, but better than nothing!

FFB was a lot of fun. I hope we can do it again too. Johnny, I was wondering why you hadn’t checked your players and then I remembered you were without internet.
