My type of breakfast is I call healthy for me and simple. Cold weather I eat flavored oatmeal, rasinbran, and an Quaker oat cereral. So far the last I can only find in one place where I live. Zooming through today, to say a quick hello! I’m with serena - it is rare that I try to list everyone’s names, as there are too many, and I hate to accidently omit someone. Welcome, Kab2rb - I’m near enough to Wichita that I’m in there frequently. In fact, that’s where my recently deceased mom lived, and so I’m headed into work on cleaning out her house.

Rmom I am from Wichita, KS I work pt office specialist and that is outside of Wichita. My dad is at Resthaven my mom is very much alive and in two months will be having a birthday. I married a man who lived outside of Wichita but almost two years ago we moved to Wichita where there are no jobs :( as everywhere else. Sorry about your mother.

kab2rb - My Dad died in 2001. Mom suffered a series of strokes, so as much as I miss her, I had already started missing so much of her before her death. Jobs are on the scarce side everywhere these days. I’m thankful my hubby’s working, but he’s in SEK, so I usually only see him on weekends.

What are Eggs Benedict- I’ve always meant to ask. I’ve heard of them all my life.

The think I don’t like about the back-up setup with Vista is that it does the back-up to a disk, but then it doesn’t close the disk. When you try to eject it, only then does it close out the disk, which takes a minute or so, before you can remove it or log off–which is a bother if you forget to do it before then.

bmonk I saw snow falling today, out the window. Where it went, I do not know. Maybe it was too cold and went back home.

Eggs Benedict, when I’ve had them, are poached eggs on ham and a toasted half English muffin, covered with the hollandaise sauce. Yummy, but probably a ton of cholesterol and calories…

Is Canadian bacon peameal bacon? We don’t call anything up here Canadian bacon.

And, what’s more, Vista always has to stop and ask for permission–even when you just opened the dern program.

I like peameal bacon better than cured ham. I do like black forest ham though.

Canadian bacon is bacon, cured, but not very smoky, and it is formed into a roll, so instead of strips of bacon, youget a round of bacon.

Hollandaise sauce is sort of like mayo, but it has lemon juice and sometimes lemon zest, and is served warm. It’s yummy and a little goes a long way as it’s so rich.

We have strips of bacon. Now figure this out. Our Maple Leaf brand bacon is made in the States. I have to buy President’s Choice to get Candian strip bacon. How much sense is that?

Yes, we have a Xerox (R) Copy Center (T), and the dern thing can be so frustrating. Put a sheet of paper in and mash the start button, and it tells you to load x type of paper, and verify you loaded it, or else you must go into conniptions to tell it to copy at 100% on letter paper. So helpful, I want to boot it into Montana!

Luckily, at the other office, we have a copier (Mita?) that has a default of 100% on letter paper. Want anything else, and you tell it what to do.

We just got a new copier at work, and the things is so dang ed fast that it makes it own paper jams. I can’t kick quite as far as you, but I’ll settle for NC! :}

Whatever happened to allowing us to think for ourselves? Uh-oh - the rise of the machines, and I bet they never heard of Assimov (sp).

Celecca and Shika Canadian bacon here looks nothing like bacon. It looks more like a round roll of the type of ham referred to as smoked pork chops. When I’ve been in Ontario and had Eggs Benedict, the Canadian Bacon looks the same as what I get here. Hollandaise sauce is made with eggs, very rich, and YUMMY!!! And also goes good with asparagus.

@Shika and celecca, I’m no expert on cooking–only on eating! I think I know enough about cooking that, If I had to survive on my own efforts, I’d be able to last until I figured out how to make more tasty stuff. But, depending on how much concentration I put on it, it might take me a month or more to get there….

Celecca, I agree with you about Vista, but I don’t have very many problems with it.

@Terry, it’s not so much problems, as annoyances. Little things that could be finished off better. Like checking who started a program before asking if it should continue, or preparing a disk to be ejected when it’s done backing up.

Some problems are not so small. My sister, an IT person in a good-sized corporation, once got a new computer and loaded, I think, Word 8.0 or something like that. Anyway, Windows got an update, and decided that Word also needed to be updated to version 6.0–and was ready to do it, except she noticed and stopped it. So she wrote a stiff letter to Microsoft asking why these nearly automatic updates hadn’t bothered to compare the current version number with the update version number.

Little things, usually annoyances–but sometimes potentially a real problem.

In some parts of Canada, they refer to canadian bacon as peameal bacon. The term “Canadian Bacon” is used in the U.S. amd is just like the Mickey D’s canadian bacon.

Bmonk–And such is the reason they now have Windows 7. I have the free upgrade I just need to put the time aside and convert!

And you’re right, Bmonk, if the user is not aware of the updates, it can cause problems!

Quieted down around here, must be the east coaster eating din din. Certainly enough talk about food to make anyone hungry.

And the meals sounded great! Any eggs benedict left? I loooooooooooove Hollandaise. I make Knorr - just the right seasonings and so easy! Cleo was it really nice in WA? Here it was drizzly all day! Yesterday, on the other hand was beautiful.

Cleo I found some beautiful looking broccoli today and was cleaning it, lightly microwaving it, and then making an Italian dressing to marinade it. Cool it, let it soak for awhile, GREAT snack food, or light accompaniment to a meal.

I just found out today that broccoli is a good source for potassium and of course postassium can lower blood pressure and improve bone density.

Dry, you mentioned asparagus recently. We have an asparagus farm nearby. I never knew how delicious it could be until we bought it right off the field! It and broccoli are both great with Hollandaise sauce - but the butter in the sauce probably negates any benefits from the vegs.

Cleo, I love broccoli, and amazingly so do my kids! I often will lightly steam that or cauliflower, put a dressing on it, marinade, and eat them cold. I do the same with asparagus.

Dawn I have grown my own asparagus for quite a while now. Fresh picked it tastes good just the way it is. They say if you eat too much your p e e turns green, but I never had that problem! LOL! Sorry folks, just thought I’d pass that little tid bit along! Oh, and the butter thing, I don’t use that much, and I use the (so called Healthy butters/margarines, whatever!)

Thanks for the explanation, Dawn. Dry - I’m not familiar with that side effect. But when my oldest was a baby, we fed so many carrots to him, he turned orange! (Thought he was becoming jaundiced, but he wasn’t.)

I’ve heard of both phenomena but haven’t had the experience. My husband on the other hand, has mentioned it. And you are right, Dry. I use the fresh in salads and just to dip like celery, and carrots. Yummmmmm. Now I am getting hungry!

Rmom yes I have heard of that happening. I eat a lot of carrots too and always wondered if that would happen to me, but it hasn’t. I like carrots, veggies, really. And I have a bad weakness for ANY KLONDYKE bar.

Actually Dry I stick with butter. The flavor is better and it is often better than some margarines. I use very little. For instance at dinner I use a very flavorful olive oil on my bread instead of butter or margarine. I never eat margarine and I only occasionally eat butter.

Cleo - I’m with you on the butter. My husband insisted we had to use real butter when we got married, so I went along. I’ve decided that the reason margarine is considered healthier, is because it doesn’t have a generation of testing on the general population. Besides, I’ve decided that since I’m going to die of something sooner or later, a heart attack doesn’t sound too bad of a way to go.

Cleo, I am the same way with butter vs margarine. Wolfangil has tried to change that with me but to no avail.

Dawn I have extra virgin olive oil for cooking, but I buy a high end extra virgin to drizzle on bread. It is pricey but lasts for a long time because you only drizzle it. Some places let you taste the olive oil and the flavors vary like wine.

Cleo I’ll have to look for somewhere to try the different olive oils. I’m sure there’s a place around here. Dry the different kinds of Klondike bars all sound great. I will have to try some when in the States. I don’t think they are in Canada, but you never know.

I think they have really improved margarines since the time we used to have to break the little capsule in the white marg and mix it through. Margarine wasn’t allowed to be sold yellow in Canada - only white. I use butter because my husband prefers it. I probably couldn’t tell the difference but he certainly can.

Dawn, I don’t know if you ever get down to LaConner in WA, but they have a place there called the Ginger Grater and they have a whole room devoted to tasting olive oils.

Tabby, that’s good news! My day was full of running errands. It was okay, just a bit tiring. I took a before dinner nap. Daughter #1 made spaghetti.

Carmy, i had a long busy day and got drenched in the rain many times, so the day was long. but math was good and i got to see walking buddy for about and hour and 1/2 so i was happy. i miss her.

when i got home form math supper was ready to eat all we had to do was sit down say grace and eat. it was great to come home to that, bro is up to something. lol

Good thinking, Tabby and it worked! Hi Shika. Welcome back. BTW, I looked up spelt and it is the passed of spell, as is spelled. Don’t know if one is an American spelling or not but both are correct. Mind you, my SIL uses spelt flour in her baking.

Still on the food topic I see. Well since we are, would any of you young ladies like me to nibble on your ears. :-)

I remember the ice cream trucks, they used to drive down the beach too. They had real vanilla ice cream that they would swirl into the cone, dipped in chocolate if you wanted that. I don’t remember snow cone trucks. In Texas, we would go to a place that served homemade frozen fruit bars, they had many flavors. They also had snow cones and my favorite was leche canella (cinnamon milk).

And yes I remember the trucks…………………..from old movies! LOL

Until I started making my own ice cream my favorites were Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia and Dulce de Leche.

ooh, dulce de leche is the best! Cleo, you can find the dulce con leche con cinnamon too. The trucks here don’t have the REAL ice cream cones. They just sell the packaged treats that they probably just purchased at the local store with jacked up prices too.

Dry–We have the ice cream trucks here still, too! Some Good Humour and some generic names.
