The carol “We Three Kings” explains the symbolism behind each gift.
Gold signified his mortal status as king, as he was heir to King David. Thus, it would be a start to his treasure and estate.
Frankincense signified his status as a deity, as it was what was burned in offering to deity figures. Thus, it was a divine offering.
Myrrh signified his eventual death, as it was one of the materials used in preparing bodies for burial. Thus, it indicated that they knew he would one day die as a sacrifice.
