My Dad did that with the kitchen faucet and he looked pretty much like the last panel too. I think that’s about the time Grandpa (Mom’s Dad) bought him the Time Life series of fix-it books. Dad ran downstairs to turn off the water because he didn’t have valves under the sink then. I remember Dad laughing like crazy while he and Mom cleaned up the mess. Mom on the other hand was so red I thought steam would come out of her ears! He went to the hardware store and came back with a new faucet since the handle just broke apart because the whole thing was ancient. The new faucet came with written directions and a flimsy vinyl record you could play. I thought it was pretty cool.
1985-1995 is pretty old, dare I say it but it’s getting on for 25 years if it’s one of the earlier strips, SIGH and I remember when the best thing on TV on Saturday mornings was Johnny Weissmuller swinging through the jungle with Jane(probably Maureen O’Sullivan)…. Time to go put me slippers on and sit in the rocker by the fire with a good book and a pipe.
Finally, someone who not only realizes how old this strip really is and so doesn’t ask that dumb question, but also remembers the same TV shows as me! And I have on my shelf several good books that I haven’t read yet - along with every Calvin & Hobbes book :)
Incidentally, we were still using carbon paper for office paperwork in the early 90s, so Hobbes isn’t too far off base.
Sure there were Xerox machines in Calvin’s day, but you know his parents would never leave him alone with one. Who knows what he would be making copies of!!
“Carbon copy” was so embedded in the vernacular that most of us still use it - every time we send email and use the “CC” line. When we started photocopying instead of using carbon paper (to duplicate typewritten documents), business schools tried to teach typists/secretaries to just use “C:” instead of “CC” - but the single digit never quite caught on.
CC: awgiedawgie
If Hobbs was so smart - why didn’t he tell Calvin about the valve under the sink? Smart indeed! I give Calvin credit for trying. I bet the next time he needs to fix a faucet , he gets it right.
I suppose that flooding is pretty serious disaster in an pen & ink world. Unless Waterson uses a waterproof media, the entire universe may just wash away!
We don’t know where Hobbes was, but we know Calvin was ahint the door…
Like carbons got into the language, we also still “dial” telephones and “tape” shows. I’m sure there are plenty of other forgotten technologies that still shape our language, but my mind fails me at the moment.
Puddleglum: Thanks for the memory. Now I can’t get that song out of my head (rub, dub, just relaxin’ in the tub…)
Dreamscourge: Those old Tarzan movies were great, but remember when most of Saturday morning was live-action shows? Remember “Fury” or “My Friend Flicka”? Or how about the old Warner Bros theater cartoons before the censors decided they were too violent and cut them to pieces.
Maybe “carbons” is tiger-speak for pencils since they’re made from graphite? Kidding!
I remember playing with carbon paper and getting that filthy black stuff all over.
Thanks for the memories, all. It seems that a lot of the same ancient people like me are the ones reading these same comic daily. Ahhh, the good ‘ol days!
And, yes, there’s still phrases and words in use today that come from even as far back as the middle ages! “Dead ringer”, “Graveyard shift”, “Breakfast”, etc.
Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink,
Water, water everywhere with Calvin at the sink.
Water, water everywhere from the sink that has no knobs,
Water, water everywhere and I think it just drowned Hobbs.
dreamscourge
i think that at least some of the Tarzan movies pre-dated the Hayes Office. Maureen sure isn’t wearing much in those photos - even by today’s standards.
a bit of trivia. in the first movie, the actor who played the head of the safari Jane and Dr. Porter were on, later went on to play Commissioner Gordon in the Batman TV series.
The ability to respond to and control unexpected flooding is a very valuable skill for a sailor. Good to see Calvin is preparing himself early in life. Now he just needs to take after that little Dutch boy and stick a finger in that leak before it gets any worse!
Calvin was trying to do something good. He just messed it up.
Rather than punishing him, Dad might want to let him “help” repair the damage, as a learning experience.
I’ll always remember that my dad never even bawled me out for taking apart our “Big Ben” alarm clocks. I always meant to put them back together after I learned what made them tick, but when that mainspring busts out, there is no going back.
If I remember correctly Jane’s clothing dramatically increased in coverage after the release of Tarzan and his Mate, which is where that photo was from.
It looks like the Hayes Office insisted that Maureen’s dress come down to just above the knee, which was sad, the original costume was much more believable, and a lot more exciting to my 12 year old mind at the time.
Interestingly enough she only did one or two more Tarzan films after the dress change, she claimed it was a conflict of artistic viewpoints with the chipm tho’ but you never know it might have been disgust with the censors ;)

Hobbes, rather than paper and carbon you may want to find a bucket and a mop.

Listen to us. We’re saying this is “old” when it’s the acceleration in technology that’s passing us by at ever-increasing speed.
