Briefcase! Hobbes thought it was a lunch box.

How can his briefcase smell like tuna? He has it in his hand as he enters the house (panel 1).

It’s a different briefcase that he’s holding, evidently: his not-as-good briefcase. Wouldn’t you know…

Uh oh. Looks like Hobbes didn’t make it through re-entry.

It seems to me that Calvin’s Dad has all the excitement of a used, wet bath towel, lying lifeless on the bathroom floor. I can’t tell if he’s arrogant or if he’s just a few cells short of a complete brain?

it’s so nice to be home from vacation,just didn’t have the time for pictures to remember the occasion.

Dad has learned to take Calvin’s stories in stride. At least he plays along a little bit. His mom won’t.

Macushlalondra - I agree - Nothing wrong with Calvin’s parents! If they reacted any differently, a lot of the boy mind vs. adult mind comedic dynamic would be lost!

I smile a lot at C & H - though for some reason, many times it’s a wistful smile. Age?

Susan, it would be nice if you, a self-professed “never-going-to-be-a-parent” would stop making inane remarks about how children should be raised. Those of us with kids know it’s not nearly as cut-and-dried as you would like to believe. Years of experience with a kid like Calvin tell us that ignoring the fanciful tales is the only way to deal with his tendency to destroy everything in sight in the name of his fantasy.

I disagree, JanCinVV, I’ve raised three kids and found that some parental interaction goes a long way to showing kids the path to follow. When you’re in a “togetherness mode” instead of an us against them mode” you have a lot more options and a lot more control. It also makes for significantly less stress for everyone all the way around.

All our kids loved cartoons I miss the good old days of us all watching cartoons together I still watch but its not the same

i went to see the first “Muppet Movie” in a theater with my then girlfriend. we deliberately went to an afternoon show so we could sit and watch when children were watching as well. we figured it would enhance the experience, and it did (though it was a little hard at times to make out some of the dialogue).

yyguy, “The Muppet Movie” was part of my high school graduation present. We went to a 3-story Pickwick Book Store (before it became something else), and I was allowed to buy anything I wanted!!! 3 hours later we took the 3 bags of books to the car and walked to the Cinerama Dome to stand in the long line. I think all of the adults and children in line and in the audience had a great time. As for this strip, I think Calvin needs to let dad have a second to de-stress before hitting him with the fun of the day. He’d be a little more receptive, maybe.

If Dad has a “good briefcase” then why on Earth is he taking a less-than-good briefcase to work? I mean, what’s he saving the “good briefcase” for if not FOR work??? Where ELSE would he take it???!!! If he’s not going to use it himself then, yes, Calvin and Hobbes ARE just going to use it as a lunchbox!

There’s something fishy about that briefcase! (groan) How did Calvin know the Martians didn’t like them? They rushed to judgment out of presumption, fear and suspicion. Their stay on Mars was so brief. I guess that’s why they took a brief case. They went ‘clear’ to Mars. Apparently there were no clouds or space debris along the way.

I can never figure out when the best time for me to visit this site going to be.

I loved the Muppet Movie - was humming the Rainbow Connection this morning.

High School “uniform”- air force fatigue pants and an Animal t-shirt. Graduated in 77. Still miss that shirt.

I nominate Calvin as a Muppet. He’d fit right in. I bet Jim Henson would have loved him.

My dad almost fell into the aisle (he got the aisle seat because he is 6’3”) at the “gone with the Schwinn” joke.

I wasn’t sure how far I could push the family budget. Maybe it was more than 3 bags - about $200, if I remember correctly. (Less expensive than a car!) My parents wanted to see, and celebrate, my wide variety of interests. I completed my Nancy Drew collection up to that point, got the PDQ Bach bio, and got the Life book of Nazi Germany, among other things. I’d say that was a pretty wide variety!
