The first time I took the family car out by myself I took my girlfriend downtown on a Saturday even though I was specifically told not to go there (this was before we had shopping malls and all the stores were downtown) . On the way back, I pulled out of my parking space and creased the car on a corrugated steel back bumper of the p/u truck in front of me. My father was a man who found it much easier to punish unmercifully than to forgive, so I told him that I was parked at the local super market and someone creased the car while my girlfriend and I were in the store, therefore it was not my fault. My father was skeptical, but I stuck to that story until my father went to his grave and he never did learn the truth. Moral of the story: Don’t go home Calvin. If your father is like mine was you’ll regret it.
Okay you all know I am a HUGE Calvinist… raising three wonderful boys of my own. But, even I wonder how in the world I could have raised Calvin. At sometime even Mother Teresa would have to break.
Ah it’s a beautiful day Calvin, punishment can wait until dark, when going to your bedroom without dinner (broccoli and carrots) is not to bad a punishment.

—————-
A life lived without honor is among the saddest of stories. Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once.
Be brave Calvin! Everybody makes mistakes but the brave use those opportunities to learn courage!
When my kids were growing up, I had a rule:
If you break my car, there will be no car. We lived in BKN NY & I could get to work by subway.
My wife was the one who wanted to go for a drive on the weekends.
The kids became very careful drivers.
Did you know that if you use your BB gun to shoot the middle of the rear window of a parked car on a really hot day that the glass will literally explode? I didn’t either.
I see there are a great many of you here at this fine comic that have ruined your dad’s car or parts of it. Then even lied about it. No wonder we all like Calvin & Hobbes so much. He is living the childhood we all lived and grew out of.

With a little luck, maybe his parents won’t even notice the windshield as they drive down the road. ……………………………….
jrbj, my old man went to the grave scratching his head over a few strange coincidences too.

The third panel, climbing over obstacles and leaping into the unknown without fear, is what life is all about. So beautifully illustrated here.

Oooh, the car incident!
At least this time they don’t need to pretend that they can find the car before imagining that it might be possible to fix…
jpozenel about 15 years ago
The sooner he gets home, the less likely that they’ll get in the car to go look for him. That should give him some time to come up with a good story.

Dad its like this Something shiny like a gum wrapper or broken glass concentrated the suns rays and broke the windshield right before my eyes
