I love this one. Hobbes is here like a mother, who holds her children warm and protects them. It’s great!

From the earliest of times, fire has held a fascination for man. On a cold winter night I still love to sit in front of the wood stove with a scotch and a good book.

One day the Animals gathered around and watched in fascination as Man invented a way to start a fire at will.

“That’s it,” muttered the Wise Old Owl. “The world will never be the same again.”

After many nights of sitting around campfires at my camp on the bayou, and watching glowing animal eyes at the edge of the clearing, I’ll have to pat Calvin on the back…he finally got one right!

I disagree. I think Mr. Watterson has shown his true genius here! ~~ …Well! ~~ Leaving what comes after that to our own imaginations and anything he could have said would only have served to spoil that.

Great strip. I love the idea of “safety” near fire while snuggling with a warm tiger belly! Safety, fire, and being eaten by a tiger. What stark opposites set in such close and comforting proximity!!

Calvin I agree nothing better but in years to come when Hobbes gets old Susie might be better

Am I the only one surprised that Calvin’s parents allowed him to be alone(except for a stuffed tiger)in a room with a fire going full blast in a a fireplace?

They trust the tiger!

Then everything in the house, the tiger and the kid stink endlessly of putrid, carcinogenic wood smoke. They trust a little boy around fire unsupervised? They’ll learn! Fire is better than candy to little boys, & this is Calvin we’re talking about here.

Pure bliss! Whether it’s a hot tiger’s belly or a hot husband’s belly … it’s ALL good!!! What more could anybody want or ask for?!?

Today’s strip is a delightful change - Calvin happy and contented and, so far, not in trouble. He should thank his parents for providing such a nice home. Just dreaming, but my grown kids are appreciative now.

Heaven, so long as you don’t tickle said tiger tummy. That would break the peace.

Just because you can’t see the parents, some people have jumped to the conclusion that Calvin is unsupervised here. How do you know that his parents aren’t just a few feet away, snuggling together on the couch or something?
