He has the makings of a great businessman - or a corporate lobbyist! But with Calvin’s wicked ingenuity and self-confidence, I see him being the CEO. Heaven help us.
Lewreader, I always bought the educational stuff for my daughter…even if it was sometimes more fun than strictly educational! Learning is learning, even if the lesson is just in how to have some fun with the parents…Calvin even has fun on the camping trips…just reread the comments to his dad. You can’t tell me he didn’t have fun watching Dad’s face!
I am like Calvin… I love the museum gift shops! Only I am not so lucky as to get Mom to pay for it, and my wife won’t! She agrees it’s “science junk”. But hey! The museum has to pay its electric bill, doesn’t it!
Also, I am sure at this point in the game that Watterson could start coming out with some limited edition “junk” or a Sunday only strip and I am sure he now has the clout to ignore the pressure. C’mon Bill! Pleeeaaasssse???
One of my prized possessions came from just such a gift shop at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. One of the two trees that still existed from when he was alive died recently and I bought a bowl made from the wood of his Tulip Poplar tree.
Watterson didn’t license his work, but there was a few legit items that had his characters. A couple of calenders, two textbooks, and a T-Shirt in a traveling art exhibit.
Anything past them stole the pictures, and was not licensed by Watterson or Universal Press Syndicate.
I’m glad that Watterson didn’t overexpose C&H, and even happier still that we see less and less of the stickers depicting Calvin urinating on a truck logo.
Well they’re headed for the exit and Calvin managed not to bite anyone… Now we’ll see if he can make it to the car without using his new horns to perforate someone’s backside?
Yeah! He could claim that Batman Begins and The Dark Knight have great value as social commentary and that Batman: The Animated Series has some of the most beautiful animation on TV!
For a while there were a lot of window decals on pickup trucks depicting Calvin…UNOWAT.
Also, I have a t-shirt depicting C&H with a caption “1986 to 1996 - thanks for the memories”. Wonder if it’s legit. I would have posted a picture but don’t know how. Any suggestions?
Yes, educational. Just recently he achieved worldwide acclaim for the discovery of a new dinosaur in Utah, a 14-horned tricerotops, that he named Kosmoceratops calvinii. I can’t wait to see the hat they make for that one!
The incipient lawyer in Calvin manages to make his case before the court of Mom and guilts the judge and wins his case. This kid is a pistol, no doubt….

Someone correct me if my memory fails, but didn’t Watterson refuse to license any of this kind of merchandising?

This is the best evidence yet that Calvin will grow up to be a paleontologist,
Bittermelon of Truth about 14 years ago
I don’t know about that, tbree.
In the May 4 1988 Calvin said: “Archaeologists have the most mind-numbing job on the planet.”
I just think he’d rather take the credit without having to brush and sift through tons of dirt ;)

LX013, you’re surely aware that C&H was never licensed (legally) for any of those products except the book collections?

Calvin has three ways to go given his intelligence. A politician, a businessman or, more than likely a con man

As for a “good politician,” that’s an oxymoron.
