Hmm, I am beginning to think Calvin may need some help. I can understand some of these concerns if you are riding in the back seat with your little sister, but not your best stuffed buddy.

I just wonder what you’ve won, Calvin. You’ll just have to wait until you get home,

Yes, I saw your comment last night. It took you 12 hours to respond to mine, so I was beginning to get worried about your heart condition. :>)By the way, I always try to read the end of the previous day’s comments. There are some real night owls on this site.

My dad would have, PULLED over, PULLED me out, and PULLED my pants down before God and Creation. I learned the first time, well the second.

Hi, Hobbes. I tend to turn in early most of the time. It often makes for being a very early morning riser though. I can’t stand staying in bed just for the sake of trying to get 8 hours.

Are you up early – or staying up very late?

@Lewreader,I thought you hit one out of the park yesterday with that comment about Dogsniff thinking something funny and then looking for comics where he could use it. I said it was hilarious, but I wonder whether somebody thought I was just being facetious and mocking.BTW, go Red Sox!

@scuttlebutt99 – if every kid who acted the way Calvin does went to a shrink, there would be no appointment times for anyone else, and schools would be graduating more of them! And I also remember my parents turning around, but we had the traditional “If I have to stop this car…” It happened once. Dad hit the brakes and we went flying. We learned that lesson!

Why DVD players for the car are the BEST INVENTION EVER. As a father of four, I would win the weird face contest too.

I would tell my sons, “Now I don’t wanna hear another peep out of you!” Then I’d hear a sheepish lottle ‘peeep’ from the back seat.

@Lewreader – my old man was too impatient to stop to beat us. He just reached back with his long arm and got us. My brother got hurt more than I did usually because I was directly behind dad (I was thinking ahead).

What is happening in that back seat is so true to life, it’s brilliant. Have lived through the script too many times to count, but the drawing is genius. Love the Evil Finger Creep in the third panel.

This strip is from the first year, and Bill Watterson added shoulder harnesses in the front seat about a year later. But in the back seat, as in life, Calvin was still unrestrained.

PUDDLEGLUM & HOBBES If I sometimes pick on the zany Mr D Sniff, it is because I respect him, but more so I’m jealous as hell. “Why didn’t I think of that? Why didn’t I get up earlier than DOGSNIFF”? Please do not tell him I said that. But seriously folk, I bet I get punched in the nose more than him.

At the age of 6 with a stuffed tiger for a best friend that he “imagines” is real, if I were Calvin’s parents I would chalk his behavior up to a wildly creative imagination (as most children that age seem to have) . . . I wouldn’t automatically assume he’s schizophrenic and haul him to a psychiatrist for help. Now if he were older (say, 8, 9 and beyond), then that’s when I’d begin to worry about his mental health and would seek some help for him!

I wonder how long the situation in panel 6 lasted? I’m thinking at most about 15-20 seconds.

Mom and Dad were wise not to produce a little baby brother or sister for Calvin. The poor thing would never have survived!

By the way, I don’t think anyone has noticed that if Dad is in a panel, Hobbes is a stuffed toy. When it is just Calvin and him, he is his own self.

OMG! Late to the party, but this is one of my favorite strips! Been laminated and on my fridge for a couple of years now! It reminded me so much of a vacation we took, our first trip to Niagara Falls. My then young sons were fighting in the back seat, and my husband had to pull off the road to stop the fighting! And no, he has NEVER laid a hand on the kids. He just told them to “knock it off” or we were going back home! Not an argument after that, or for the rest of the vacation! :-D
