We’ve all laughed at them without believing that every midwesterner is as dumb as they are. Her comedy is based mostly on caricature and she seems to be reasonably even-handed with who gets ridiculed..
Americans of various ethnic backgrounds have been the butt of jokes since people started immigrating. Sadly, while some groups have managed to make it almost a hate crime to make fun of them, other groups, such as blondes, southerners, and people of faith (Christians in particular), have not. I don’t know what that says about us.

I have found that Christians are the MOST sensitive about humor about their religion. Hell, they start foaming at the mouth when you start reciting the factual history of Christianity to them. They consider it not politically correct.
Ray C (also a great name–racy?): In 1997 I read “Redneck Manifesto” with the aim of getting another point of view. The author made a number of good points, one of which was that it seemed too acceptable to use the term ‘white trash’, “redneck”, etc., while to use derogatory terms toward other groups was not acceptable. The most recent Quizno’s ad mocks mountain people–not a funny ad. Fortunately, there are no more Frito Bandito ads, Mafia directed ads – and it seems that elderly jokes are going by the wayside. Billy Ray Cyrus hosted a History Channel program about ‘Hillbillies’. Julie should watch this and Shelby Davis’ ‘The True Meaning of Pictures’. As an elderly Caucasian Northerner, I will admit disdain for those who persist with displaying the Confederate flag (somewhat prevalent in my small town in northern Illinois). Even the best of us slipped up last year and likened his bowling performance as unworthy of even the Special Olympics. Anyway what does this say about us (you ask)? That we’re still too mean spirited. Usually, Julie pokes fun at members of her inner circle and should stick to that.
WAY TO GO, Joe Allen Doty! Finally, someone tells it like it is, daring to incur the wrath of Roman Catholics & their corrupt “church”. I’m quite certain that Jesus had this “church” in mind when He warned His disciples that “many would come in His name”.
